If you are flying to pick up your puppy and the puppy will travel in the passenger
compartment under the seat in front of you then you will need a soft sided carrier
for the puppy. Brand names for these bags are Sherpa and Samsonite. Prices range from $40 - $70.
Dog crate or very small enclosure in which the pup will sleep and stay while he is alone
at home.
Hard fiberglass or plastic kennel - approximate size 32"l X 23"h 22"w
(i.e., Vari kennel - 300 or intermediate size)
A metal grid floor to fit in crate is a good idea to keep the dog dry.
Leash
Collars should be soft, adjustable and flexible so that they will
not break hair (soft nylon is good). For instructions on how to make your own, easily
and inexpensively click here.
Child gate and enclosures to confine your puppy to
rooms where he or she can do little damage to himself or his surroundings.
Grooming Utensils
Bitter apple spray - to put on objects that you don't want chewed
Rawhide chews and/or Nylabones
Toys - Nylabones toys are best because the pup cannot chew off little
bits.
Nylabone frisbies, balls, Kongs, etc.
Rope pull toys, empty plastic pop bottles are okay until the pup begins to chew bits off of
them
Food
Dog bowls (metal preferred, because they can be sterilized in the
dish washer)
Real beef marrow bones - the dogs love these. Buy them from
the butcher. Scoop out the marrow which is mostly fat and will give your dog
diarrhea. Wash with warm water and give to the dog with meat and all. DO NOT
COOK as this makes the bone brittle and the dog may swallow bone chips which may
cause serious damage. THIS IS THE ONLY KIND OF BONE to feed your dog.
Milk Bones - treats for bedtime and reward for good behaviour
PROZYME (85G bottle) To deter dogs from eating their stools
A plant derived enzyme food supplement
utilizing a proprietary formulation of specially cultured enzymes to hydrolyse
starches, proteins and triglycerides and break down cellulose with lactose and bromelain.
Can be obtained from PetSage (below).
Kaopectate caplets - in case of diarrhea (available at pharmacy or
some food chains)
